Heading Somewhere. 2018 - 2019.

Where are people headed, and why are they going there? Are they running from something or towards something? How can I depict a landscape that’s formed for people by people?

I made these paintings as I thought about people moving across oceans and borders, not just in recent years, but also historically. I thought about my family’s roots in Mexico and the Southwest and I read as much as I could about the African-American experience. I’ve been living through California fires and wondering about climate change’s impact on people, too.

These are acrylic paintings on birch wood panel with scratched and incised surfaces.
